To A Bird

When that mighty hand whose art

Flung the earth and sea apart,

Raised the mountain, rolled the plain,

Carved the tree and set the grain,

Drew upon the growing plan

Half the lineaments of man.

Then the God said, "There must be

Song to set his spirit free,

Colors to inspire his heart,

Symmetry to nurse his art."

Spoke the great divinity,

"Three in one combined shall be."
